The Shamanic Journey Technique: A Path to Inner Wisdom and Healing

The journeying technique is a meditation practice that has been used by shamans for thousands of years to gain access to the spiritual realm and receive guidance from higher powers. This technique involves entering a deep meditative trance state and visualizing yourself embarking on a journey to one of the 3 worlds as depicted by the Tree of life, the Upper, Lower and Middle world. However these are by no means the only places we can travel as there are many realms in between the worlds. Once you reach your destination, you can interact with the Spirit’s that inhabit the world you are walking in and receive insights and wisdom that can help you in your life.

Preparing for the Journey

Before embarking on your journey, it is important to prepare yourself physically and mentally. You need to create a Sacred space as the journey itself is a sacred act. This can be done through the use of burning sacred herbs to purify and attune the space, this is known as “Smudging”. We call in the Spirit’s, directions, guides, guardians and if known your power animal. You can sit, however many Shaman’s lie down to facilitate the deeper trance level that we enter. in a comfortable position and take a few deep breaths to relax your body and clear your mind. You may want to light some candles or incense, you can play Shamanic Drumming tracks or drum yourself, ensuring if you do that you beat the drum around 220 beats per minute.

Embarking on the Journey

Once you feel yourself slipping into that deeper trance state, we “slide” out, that is we leave the physical body and begin to move into the non-ordinary reality. Typically the image of the tree is summoned as our gateway to the other worlds. With doors or caves opening up to travel down, steps forming to travel up or walking behind the tree to travel to the middle world. As you enter one of the 3 worlds, allow yourself to fully immerse in the environment around you. Use your senses to explore your surroundings - what do you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste? Notice the colours, textures, and shapes of the objects and beings you encounter. You may want to journal or sketch your experiences after your meditation to help you remember them later.

Meeting your allies in the spiritual realms

As you journey through one of the 3 worlds, you may encounter various Spirit’s that offer guidance and support. The first and most important being that you will encounter is your power animal - a spiritual entity that represents your journey in this lifetime. Your power animal may take a form that surprises you, many people equate bigger as more powerful, but the fox can be more cunning than the bear. Take some time to connect with your power animal, ask questions, and receive insights and guidance that can help you in your life. At the end of this we call our power animal into our heart, we call this process the power animal retrieval.

You will encounter many other guides on your journey’s from the Sky beings (often called Angelic being in other traditions) in the upper realms, mythical creatures in the astral realms, guides, ancestors, spirits that inhabit our tools and the spirits that make up the planetary consciousness that many of us refer to as Mother Earth and Father Sky.

However, it is important to note that not all the guides you meet are helpful, many will try to guide you off of your path, this is especially true of the Middle world, which is why we Journey there only after we have formed our team of spiritual allies and power items.

Returning from the Journey

When you feel ready to return from your journey (If you use a drum track the last few minutes are erratic signalling it is time to come back), visualize yourself returning the way you came and back to your physical body. Take three deep breaths to reconnect yourself back to your physical form and feel the sensations of your body and surroundings. Open your eyes and take some time to reflect on your experiences. You may want to journal or sketch your experiences to help you remember them later.
